Jason Bateman has stepped into the director's chair for an adaptation of John Grisham's legal thriller The Partner, starring Tom Holland in the lead role. The project marks Bateman's return to feature film direction following his work on two limited series that are currently in Emmy contention.

Dual Acting Roles in Television

Bateman is simultaneously starring in two limited series vying for awards recognition. In HBO Max's DTF St. Louis, he portrays Clark, a guileless weatherman entangled in a murder mystery alongside David Harbour and Linda Cardellini. Concurrently, he appears in Netflix's Black Rabbit, where he plays Vince, a gambler serving as the counterpoint to Jude Law's character in a drama centered on a New York restaurant. Bateman also produced both projects and directed episodes of Black Rabbit, which have earned him DGA and actor award nominations.

Film Direction Pipeline

Beyond The Partner, Bateman is preparing to direct The Cackling of the Dodos, a dark comedy starring Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell as farmers who discover a body in a grain bin. Regarding his approach to The Partner, Bateman described envisioning a contemporary interpretation of the 1997 novel, drawing inspiration from action and legal thriller archetypes. "What does it look like today? What's the combination between, say, Jason Bourne and Bond and Michael Clayton, and what does that kind of stew look like?" he explained to industry publications. Holland brought the project to Bateman directly, and the director expressed enthusiasm about their forthcoming collaboration.
