Jay-Z Responds to Kanye West, Drake, and Nicki Minaj with Fiery Freestyle at Roots Picnic

Jay-Z took the stage at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia and delivered a four-minute freestyle directly addressing Kanye West, Drake, Nicki Minaj, and other figures in a rare public response. The 56-year-old mogul, performing at the 18th annual festival at Belmont Plateau on Saturday night, broke six years of solo concert silence with bars that immediately circulated across social media.

Jay-Z opened his set backed by The Roots house band with a direct response to Drake's recent track "Janice STFU," where Drake referenced "the jig is up" in apparent commentary on the older rapper. Hov fired back with a pointed rebuttal: "The jig is up, na I'm up 10, wrong chart champ, nas looked up to Hov, I never looked up to them." He continued attacking Drake's business position, rapping that Drake's publishing checks belonged to other entities and describing his status within the industry as permanent servitude.

Kanye West and Past Conflicts

The Kanye West bars cut deeper into personal territory. Jay-Z referenced Ye's past public statements about his and Beyoncé's children, stating: "My children is some of them, have you nas no shame? Y'all trying to get under skin, I really get under skin." He included an oblique reference to Lance "Un" Rivera, the music executive Jay-Z stabbed at a New York nightclub in 1999, suggesting violence was not beyond him when provoked.

Festival Scale and Performance

The Roots Picnic, which began 18 years ago as a small parking lot event, has expanded dramatically. Organizers expect approximately 80,000 attendees across the two-day festival, featuring two main stages to accommodate the expanded artist roster. Beyond the freestyle opening, Jay-Z performed a 31-song setlist spanning his entire career, bringing out Meek Mill, Jazmine Sullivan, Bilal, and a reunited State Property for collaborative performances.

The festival also serves as backdrop for commemorating the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z's debut album Reasonable Doubt. Black Thought, founder of The Roots, described the album as a "seminal record" that marked where "it all began" for the artist. The connection between Jay-Z and The Roots dates back years, with both having worked together when Jay-Z previously ran a record label.

Jay-Z has not publicly confirmed the identities of his targets, though his lyrics left little room for interpretation. The performance comes ahead of three sold-out shows scheduled at Yankee Stadium.
