Jessica Biel Returns to Film After Nine Years for Action-Comedy Matchbox the Movie

Jessica Biel is returning to cinema in Matchbox the Movie, an action-comedy featuring John Cena that will launch on Apple TV on October 9. The film, which premiered footage at San Diego Comic-Con, marks Biel's first feature-length role in nine years. Directed by Sam Hargrave, the movie adapts Mattel's iconic toy car brand into a globe-trotting adventure involving an undercover CIA agent and his childhood friends.

The Film's Premise and Cast

Matchbox the Movie centers on a group of longtime friends who discover that their leader, played by Cena, operates as a covert intelligence operative. This revelation propels the ensemble into an international mission surrounding a missing nuclear warhead. The film's cast includes Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Arturo Castro, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp alongside Biel and Cena.

In the trailer unveiled at Comic-Con, Biel's character reflects on shared childhood memories: "It's been a long time since we played Matchbox cars together." The plot escalates when Cena's character reveals the stakes: "A nuclear warhead went missing. The CIA thinks it was me — or us." Biel's character proposes an unconventional solution to reclaim their normal lives by stealing back the weapon.

Production and Creative Direction

Sam Hargrave, known for directing the Extraction franchise, helmed the project from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. The production involved substantial stunt work, with Cena performing many of his own sequences despite admitting his fear of heights. During the Comic-Con panel, Cena recalled the physical demands, noting that director Hargrave had him jumping from buildings and hanging from a helicopter. "I hate ledges. I hate heights. I hate cheating death," Cena said, describing his daily anxieties during filming.

Biel expressed a different sentiment about the experience. She shared that driving actual Matchbox cars on set made her feel "a kid again" and credited the production with revitalizing her passion for filmmaking. Skydance produced the film in collaboration with Mattel Studios, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger serving as producers.
