Early Warning Signs Dismissed During White House Years

During an interview on SiriusXM's "Let's Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa," Jill Biden described noticing her husband's troubling bedtime pattern while he was still in office. She had raised concerns with White House physicians about the recurring nighttime bathroom trips, believing the issue had been evaluated and addressed at that time.

However, the symptom persisted after Biden left the White House in January. Recognizing that the problem had not resolved, Jill Biden urged her husband to seek additional medical attention from specialists in Philadelphia. "When it continued when we got out of the White House, I said, 'Joe, we've got to go up to Jeff in Philly – something's wrong,'" she recalled during the radio interview.

Diagnosis and Ongoing Treatment

At age 83, Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer after experiencing urinary symptoms. Doctors discovered a nodule on his prostate and confirmed the cancer had metastasized to his bones before diagnosis. Biden stated publicly that his prognosis was positive and that treatment would involve taking medication for approximately six weeks, with expectations of effectively managing the condition.

Jill Biden emphasized that her husband's cancer management has become a lifelong commitment, requiring testing and medication every three months. Drawing from her own experience with family members who battled cancer, including her son Beau Biden who died from brain cancer in 2015 at age 46, she acknowledged the daily challenges of living with the disease.

Screening Guidelines and Detection Challenges

In a separate interview with CBS' "Sunday Morning," Jill Biden described the diagnosis as shocking given that her husband had undergone regular health evaluations while serving as president. Medical professionals explained that routine prostate cancer screenings are not generally recommended for men over 70 according to American Urological Association guidelines, as the disease often grows slowly in older men. This standard practice meant that Biden's cancer remained undetected during his White House years despite the visible symptoms his wife had observed.
