John Tortorella Will Not Return as Vegas Golden Knights Coach Beyond 2025-26 Season

The Vegas Golden Knights announced that John Tortorella will not remain as head coach beyond the 2025-26 season, ending his tenure with the organization after guiding the team to the Stanley Cup Final. General Manager Kelly McCrimmon confirmed the decision, citing Tortorella's significant contributions during his brief but impactful time with the franchise.

Tortorella's Brief But Consequential Tenure

Tortorella joined the Golden Knights on March 29 as a mid-season replacement for Bruce Cassidy, arriving at what the organization described as a pivotal moment. In his first stint with the team, he compiled a 7-0-1 record during the final eight games of the regular season, helping Vegas secure the Pacific Division title. The team then advanced through three consecutive playoff series victories—defeating the Utah Mammoth, Anaheim Ducks, and Colorado Avalanche—before facing the Carolina Hurricanes in the championship final, which Vegas ultimately lost.

McCrimmon issued a statement expressing gratitude for Tortorella's leadership. "When the decision was made to bring Torts to Vegas, we needed an immediate impact to help us at a pivotal point in the season," McCrimmon said. "Torts' experience and leadership proved to be the boost that we were looking for, helping guide us to the Stanley Cup Final. Tortorella's Broader Coaching Legacy

The parting marks another chapter in Tortorella's Hall of Fame-caliber career. His 847 career wins across the NHL, including playoffs, rank ninth in league history and fifth among active coaches. Only Joel Quenneville (1,139 wins), Paul Maurice (1,042), Lindy Ruff (1,028), and Peter Laviolette (934) have won more games. Tortorella has stated his desire to continue coaching, with the Golden Knights now joining the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers as teams with current head coaching vacancies.

Vegas Begins Fifth Coaching Search

The Golden Knights will enter their 10th season searching for their fifth head coach. Previous coaches Gerard Gallant, Peter DeBoer, and Cassidy all brought substantial experience to the role. The organization has not disclosed whether it will prioritize a proven coach or consider a first-time head coach candidate, though Ryan Craig, who has led the Henderson Silver Knights (Vegas's AHL affiliate) for three seasons and previously served as an assistant coach during the team's 2023 Stanley Cup championship, has been mentioned as a potential internal option.
