Vingegaard was positioned fourth in the team formation when the accident happened near a roundabout exit. His front wheel appeared to clip the kerb as his teammate Victor Campenaerts led the group through the turn. The Danish rider immediately held his right shoulder on the ground, signaling injury. Medical personnel responded quickly, transporting him via ambulance as the peloton continued ahead on what was meant to be a critical mountain stage.

Race Context and Impact

Vingegaard had begun the day trailing race leader Tadej Pogacar by 4 minutes and 30 seconds, with the Slovenian already claiming four stage victories. Despite the deficit, Vingegaard remained publicly confident, repeatedly stating he entered the race with genuine ambitions to win. Stage 15 suited his climbing strengths, featuring the Plateau de Solaison—a newly debuted 11.3-kilometer climb with a 9% average gradient classified as a Hors Categorie (HC) ascent. This was only the 47th HC climb added since the category's introduction in 1979.
