DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke conducted initial in-depth discussions with Klopp on Friday, during which both parties reached consensus on fundamental contract elements. The DFB confirmed that further negotiations are scheduled for the following week, with an expected four-year agreement contingent on approval from Klopp's current employer, Red Bull, where he holds the position of head of global football since January.

Germany's performance at the recent World Cup prompted the coaching change. The team topped their group with a game remaining but subsequently lost to Ecuador and were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32. Nagelsmann initially stated his intention to continue, but resigned on July 3rd with immediate effect, triggering the search for his replacement.

Klopp's selection represents a high-profile return to management after departing Liverpool in summer 2024. During his nine-year tenure with the English club, he delivered seven major trophies, including the 2019-20 Premier League title and the 2019 Champions League. His prior managerial success includes two German Bundesliga titles at Borussia Dortmund between 2008 and 2015, where he collaborated closely with Watzke, a connection viewed as instrumental in accelerating negotiations.

The appointment must receive final approval through a joint meeting of the DFB's supervisory board and shareholders' meeting. Klopp has been working as a television pundit for German broadcasters at the World Cup, providing match analysis and commentary. His move sparked controversy when he suggested forward Deniz Undav should start ahead of Jamal Musiala and made remarks that others interpreted as undermining Nagelsmann's authority, prompting a public apology.
