Juventus Releases Openda to Lyon on Loan After Disappointing First Season

Juventus has confirmed the loan departure of striker Loïs Openda to Ligue 1 side Lyon, concluding a disappointing stint at the Turin club. The Belgian forward, who cost the club 44 million euros plus add-ons, managed just two competitive goals in 34 appearances. The move becomes official following Juventus's friendly fixture against Standard Liège, with Lyon covering his wages and paying a 3 million euro loan fee.

The Failed Investment

Openda arrived at Juventus during the summer transfer window with considerable expectations, having secured a move from RB Leipzig. However, the 24-year-old failed to establish himself under either former manager Igor Tudor or successor Luciano Spalletti. Across Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and European competition, the Belgian managed minimal impact—scoring against Roma and Bodo/Glimt while spending significant periods on the sidelines. Juventus executives and supporters quickly deemed the investment unsuccessful.

The Liège-born forward had previously impressed in Ligue 1 during the 2022-23 season with RC Lens, making France's top division a natural destination for his recovery. Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca, formerly of AC Milan and AS Roma, will oversee Openda's rehabilitation campaign.

Juventus's Attacking Crisis

The departure highlights Juventus's persistent attacking troubles. Spalletti faces a critical shortage of available forwards after losing Dusan Vlahovic, with recent acquisition Jeff Ekhator sidelined by injury and midfielder Arek Milik also unavailable. The club remains in negotiations to recruit reinforcements—chiefly Randal Kolo Muani and Joshua Zirkzee—to address the deficit.

Paradoxically, Openda will play a final role in Juventus's pre-season preparations against Standard Liège, where he will feature prominently before departing for France. The arrangement frees resources from the wage bill while generating modest revenue, allowing Juventus to redirect funds toward its priority acquisitions and further streamline an oversized squad.
