Kenji Kamiyama Directs Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Anime Launching in 2027
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO anime directed by Kenji Kamiyama debuts in 2027 in a brand new Gundam timeline.

Bandai Namco Filmworks unveiled Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO at San Diego Comic-Con, announcing a new anime arriving in 2027 set within an entirely fresh Gundam continuity called After Apocalypse. Director and writer Kenji Kamiyama, known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Star Wars: Visions' "The Ninth Jedi," is helming the project alongside novelist Toh Enjoe, who contributes worldbuilding for the science fiction setting.

The RG Project Vision
The initiative extends beyond animation. The RG Project represents what Bandai describes as a "next-generation Gundam initiative that expands the franchise into a new universe." Sola Animation will handle production duties for the anime series. The universe interconnects with the previously announced Gundam Rogue Orbit video game, though the game's narrative unfolds 90 years after the anime's events, with both works sharing "a narrative spanning generations within one continuous world."
Kamiyama expressed his creative motivation in a statement, noting he grappled with fundamental questions when approached: "What would replace the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon? What would become of the Newtype concept?" He emphasized the opportunity to construct an original Gundam mythology from the ground up, separate from the franchise's established Universal Century timeline.
Story and Cast
The anime centers on Ray Azumi, a war orphan piloting the Gundam Zero, voiced by Takeo Otsuka. The narrative unfolds in the After Apocalypse era, where humanity discovered three transformative technologies—gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and cognitive materialization—only to have them weaponized into a self-replicating ecosystem. Within 45 years of this cataclysm, an entire generation grew up knowing only conflict in orbital and lunar environments, with Ray awakening on the lunar surface as a key figure in humanity's ongoing struggle.
Character designer Eiichi Shimizu, known for Linebarrels of Iron and his Ultraman manga adaptations, creates the mechanical designs. Stato developed original character concepts, with Miyako Takasu adapting those designs for animation as chief animation director.
