Leah Stewart fights for recovery after losing arm in Coogee shark attack

Leah Stewart, a 34-year-old primary school teacher and mother, is in critical condition after being mauled by a suspected 3.5-metre great white shark at Coogee Beach on a Saturday morning. The attack left her with severe injuries including the loss of one arm, and her family is preparing for extended medical treatment and prosthetic rehabilitation.

The Attack and Immediate Response

Stewart was swimming between the designated safety flags in calm, clear water when the shark struck. Off-duty volunteer lifeguard Charlie Verco, aged 24, paddled directly into the bloodied water to reach the unconscious woman and pull her onto his board. Surf life savers and members of the public applied tourniquets and performed CPR on the beach, actions that proved critical to her survival.

The swift emergency response prevented what could have been a fatal outcome. Paramedics transported Stewart to St Vincent's Hospital, where medical teams worked to control her extreme blood loss. She underwent multiple surgeries to address lacerations and fractures throughout her body caused by bites across her arms and legs.

Current Condition and Family Impact

Stewart remains on life support in the intensive care unit at St Vincent's. Her brother Joshua confirmed that she had undergone arm amputation and faces ongoing assessments for possible damage to her legs. The full extent of long-term injuries has not yet been determined. Her 18-month-old daughter has become a central concern for the family, who are working to maintain stability for the toddler while managing the medical crisis.

Joshua described his sister as energetic and deeply devoted to ocean swimming, emphasizing that she had taken all appropriate safety precautions. "It's such a tragic situation," he told journalists. "We're just trying to make it all work."

Community Support and Financial Campaign

The family launched a GoFundMe campaign to prepare for specialised medical expenses over an extended recovery period. Prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation care are expected to represent significant costs. More than 1,000 community members gathered at Coogee Beach for a swim-out event organised by Randwick City Council and the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club to demonstrate support for Stewart and her family.

At the event, a letter from the family was read aloud, expressing gratitude to first responders, medical professionals, and the broader community. The family characterised Stewart as "a survivor" and acknowledged that recovery will be "a long, painful, difficult road." Local leaders emphasised that her life was saved by immediate first aid provided by brave individuals on the beach.
