Lionsgate Revives Leprechaun Franchise With New Horror Film From Saw Writers

Lionsgate has commissioned a new Leprechaun horror film written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the screenwriting duo behind Saw IV through Saw 3D. Producer Oren Koules, who oversaw all ten films in the Saw series, will lead the project through his production company Koulest Productions alongside his son Miles Koules. The film marks Lionsgate's second major attempt in recent years to revitalize the cult horror-comedy franchise.

Production Details and Creative Team

Melton and Dunstan bring considerable horror credentials to the project. Beyond their extensive work on the Saw franchise, the writing partners have collaborated on screenplays for The Collector, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Unhuman, with Dunstan also directing several of those films. Dan Heffner and Ketura Kestin are attached as executive producers on the new Leprechaun entry, though plot specifics remain undisclosed.

Franchise History and Previous Revival Attempts

The Leprechaun franchise spans eight films released between 1993 and 2018, with Warwick Davis becoming synonymous with the role of the murderous, wisecracking leprechaun across six installments. The original 1993 film, directed by Mark Jones, marked one of Jennifer Aniston's earliest screen appearances. Lionsgate acquired the franchise when it purchased Trimark Pictures in 2000, gaining control over subsequent sequels and revival efforts.

The studio's most recent efforts to revitalize the property illustrate the challenges of modernizing the character. In 2014, Final Destination: Bloodlines director Zach Lipovsky helmed Leprechaun: Origins, while a 2017 straight-to-DVD legacy sequel titled Leprechaun Returns attempted to recapture audience interest. Both received poor critical reception and minimal audience engagement. Earlier this year, Lionsgate attached director Felipe Vargas to oversee another iteration written by Mike Van Waes, with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon producing, though that project appears to have stalled. The franchise maintains cultural presence through annual marathon screenings on Syfy every St. Patrick's Day, indicating residual fan interest despite critical dismissals.
