Lloyds Bank Shuts West Byfleet and Staines Branches as Closures Accelerate Across UK
Lloyds bank is closing branches in West Byfleet and Staines, eliminating the last banking facility in one Surrey town.

Lloyds bank is shutting two Surrey branches this week, with West Byfleet losing its last remaining banking facility. The closures in West Byfleet and Staines mark the latest in a pattern affecting thousands of communities nationwide. Business owners and residents have objected to the decision, citing concerns over elderly and small business access to face-to-face financial services.
Impact on Residents and Local Economy
West Byfleet resident Norah Holder, 88, described the closure as "diabolical" for an area with significant retirement developments, noting the town lacks even a Post Office for alternative banking support. Ancy Fenton, who operates a gifts and lifestyle shop, emphasized that banking extends beyond mobile applications: "Sometimes you need to go and speak to a real person." Shop owner Dennis Macco added that personal interactions are essential for community cohesion, saying he preferred seeing people when conducting business at a bank.
Teacher Cecilia Scott, 51, warned the closures could deter people from living in the area despite West Byfleet's strong infrastructure, including transport links, supermarkets, medical facilities, and restaurants. She stressed that banking services are now as critical as these other amenities for community viability.
Broader Closure Trend and Political Response
The two Surrey closures reflect a nationwide pattern of branch consolidation. Research by consumer organization Which? documented over 6,000 branch closures between 2015 and 2024. A further 86 locations across Lloyds Banking Group—which encompasses Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland—alongside NatWest branches are set to close, with the majority attributed to Lloyds entities.
Woking MP Will Forster raised concerns in March about West Byfleet becoming a "banking desert," calling for a review into establishing a banking hub where different financial institutions rotate service provision throughout the week. Forster and business leaders view this model as a potential solution to maintain community access while accommodating bank business decisions. The UK government has launched a review into Banking Hub rollout and the wider impact of branch closures on financial service accessibility.
Lloyds stated that customers increasingly prefer flexible banking options and that the bank offers more choices than ever before. The bank conducts independent cash access assessments before closures and visits affected locations to evaluate impact, though communities argue these measures do not address the needs of those unable or unwilling to use digital banking.
