Lucas Bergvall Told to Stay at Tottenham Despite Manager's Refusal to Guarantee Playing Time

Lucas Bergvall has privately informed Tottenham he wants to leave the club, even as manager Roberto de Zerbi publicly urged the Swedish midfielder to stay. De Zerbi acknowledged he cannot guarantee the 20-year-old a guaranteed starting position following major squad investments this summer.

De Zerbi made his position clear during Tottenham's pre-season fixture against Sydney FC, where Bergvall started in the first half of a match the English club won 4-2 on penalties. The manager stated he would welcome Bergvall's continued presence but emphasized that no player receives an assured first-team role. De Zerbi described the midfielder as "potentially a top, top, top player" yet stressed that Tottenham's competitive rebuild requires managing a deep squad of 21 to 24 high-level performers rather than relying on just eleven regular starters.

Bergvall has attracted interest from Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, both Premier League rivals. The midfielder's preference for a deeper midfield role—operating as part of a double pivot—has become a focal point of negotiations. De Zerbi acknowledged this wish but explained that central midfield positions demand versatility, requiring players to contribute defensively, maintain possession, and transition the ball forward depending on tactical requirements.

Timing of the Dispute

De Zerbi also admitted to making errors in managing Bergvall during the chaotic conclusion to last season. The Italian took charge in March when Tottenham sat 17th in the Premier League, securing survival with a final-day victory over Everton. The manager acknowledged these early missteps contributed to uncertainty around the young midfielder's future at the club.

Tottenham's recent transfer activity has intensified Bergvall's concerns about his opportunities. The club broke its transfer record twice in consecutive days, signing midfielder Matheus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million and midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for £100 million. These signings have substantially reduced the pathway to regular minutes for competing players.

De Zerbi made clear his philosophy regarding player retention: he will not persuade anyone to stay against their wishes. He stated that if Bergvall chooses to depart, Tottenham's executives will handle the situation appropriately.
