Luke Littler Defends World Matchplay Darts Crown with Victory Over Springer

Luke Littler secured a 10-6 victory over Germany's Niko Springer in the opening round of the World Matchplay Darts, maintaining his bid to retain the title he won twelve months ago. The 19-year-old world number one, competing at Winter Gardens in Blackpool, recovered from a slow start to dominate the latter stages of the match and signal his credentials for the tournament.

Match Performance

Littler trailed 3-2 after the opening break but shifted momentum significantly upon his return. Although Springer levelled the contest at 5-5, the defending champion captured five of the final six legs to secure progression. During the encounter, Littler struck seven maximum 180-point finishes and maintained a three-figure average of 109.53 across the match.

"It felt good. It felt very nice. The first five legs were okay and then when I came back off the break I felt really good," Littler said after the win. "It was bit annoying not going into the second break with the lead. Niko played his part but I found another gear and finished it off."

Tournament Context and Prize Pool

The World Matchplay represents one of darts' most prestigious competitions, with a total prize fund of £1 million. The winner of the tournament will receive £225,000. Littler arrives at the event in exceptional form, having claimed three major titles earlier in the year and holding the world number one ranking.

Other opening-round winners included Stephen Bunting, the ninth seed from England, who survived three match-darts against the Netherlands' Niels Zonneveld to prevail 13-12 in a narrow contest. Josh Rock from Northern Ireland, seeded eighth, defeated England's Luke Woodhouse 10-4, while 16th-seeded Nathan Aspinall won an all-English matchup against Joe Cullen 10-5.
