A devastating fire at a beachfront hotel in Dominican Republic claimed one life and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,700 tourists, with preliminary findings suggesting that flammable roof structures and wind conditions accelerated the blaze. The incident occurred at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in the coastal resort town of Bayahibe, affecting guests, visitors, and emergency responders.

Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian woman, died in the fire. Three additional people were transported to medical facilities, while six others received treatment at the scene. Videos from local media captured thick plumes of smoke rising above the Caribbean shoreline as flames consumed the resort's palm-thatched roof sections. The fire was eventually brought under control, though authorities have not yet disclosed the final cause of ignition.

Rapid Fire Spread and Structural Factors

The Emergency Operations Center of Dominican Republic noted that fire propagation occurred quickly due to the combustible nature of palm-based roof materials combined with prevailing wind conditions at the time. The adjacent Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, part of the same hotel franchise, sustained no damage. Guests were relocated to nearby accommodation facilities following the evacuation.

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, which operates approximately 8,400 franchised properties worldwide, has not issued a public statement regarding the incident. The investigation into the fire's origin remains active, with authorities continuing their assessment.

Dominican Republic's Emergency Operations Center confirmed that tourist activities throughout Bayahibe and surrounding areas have resumed without disruption and continue operating under normal safety protocols. The nation received approximately 5.6 million visitors during the first five months of the year, establishing it as the Caribbean's leading tourist destination, known for white sand beaches and clear waters.
