A serious collision near Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex triggered an eight-hour closure of the M25 motorway, trapping hundreds of drivers in stalled traffic with limited access to water, food, or toilet facilities. The incident occurred at 05:30 on Thursday morning, but the road remained shut until 20:40 due to multiple complications including an oil spill and extreme heat.

The Crash and Its Cascading Consequences

The initial collision near Grays, Essex, set off a chain of complications that extended disruption far beyond the typical incident recovery time. National Highways determined that approximately 400 metres of road surface required complete resurfacing following fluid contamination from the crash. The agency also noted that cooling operations to prepare the asphalt slowed considerably due to temperatures reaching 29 degrees Celsius in the region.

A secondary accident later reported on the Dartford Crossing's QEII Bridge, involving a car and motorcycle between junctions 31 and 1A, created additional congestion in the broader area, though the extent of its impact on overall delays remains unclear.

Stranded Passengers and Desperate Conditions

Drivers endured severe hardship during the extended closure. A 17-year-old from Romford, experiencing her first motorway drive just days after passing her test, spent eight hours stationary in her vehicle. She reported that both she and her cousin's mobile phones died early in the ordeal, leaving them unable to contact family or receive traffic updates. Her parents remained anxious and uninformed about her whereabouts and estimated arrival time.

Another traveller, a 29-year-old civil servant, found a routine one-hour journey from Lakeside to Colchester extending to more than nine hours. She described becoming emotional as evening approached, fearing she might be trapped overnight in an unfamiliar area with her engine and air conditioning running continuously—a situation neither fuel-efficient nor sustainable. Passengers highlighted the absence of any essential services: no water supplies, no food vendors, and no accessible toilets across the entire stretch.

Some drivers sought refuge in the Thurrock service station car park, only to find themselves unable to exit the facility once the queue resolved. A journalist reported witnessing hundreds of vehicles crowded into the area, with families resorting to improvised entertainment. Parents with infants faced particular distress, having ventured out for brief shopping trips only to become stranded for hours without baby supplies.
