A major supermarket chain has recalled all lots of GreenWise-brand organic frozen blueberries and mixed berries sold across eight southeastern states following investigations into a multistate E. coli outbreak. The contaminated products, sourced from a Chilean supplier, were distributed to Publix stores between early July and late June, with health officials warning consumers not to consume the affected items.
Scope of the Recall
Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., based in San Carlos, Chile, supplied the contaminated frozen blueberries that triggered the investigation. Publix announced the recall of all lots of GreenWise Organic Frozen Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries on July 3 and 29, 2026. The recalled inventory reached retail locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. A specific recalled product identified a 10-ounce package with lot code 60401 and a best-by date of February 9, 2028.
Health Risks and Symptoms
The outbreak involves the pathogenic strain E. coli O145:H28. Symptoms of infection typically emerge between a few days and up to nine days after consuming contaminated food, including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. In severe cases, the infection can progress to bloody diarrhea and life-threatening complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, as well as high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems.
Regulatory Response
The FDA and CDC, working with state and local health departments, initiated a regulatory assessment of the Chilean supplier to examine their contamination prevention procedures and hazard controls. Publix implemented an internal stop sale of the affected frozen GreenWise products by the end of June 2026, removing them from all shelves. The grocery chain offered full refunds to customers who purchased the recalled items.
