Manchester United will field a squad heavy on academy talent when they travel to Rosenborg for a preseason friendly on Friday, with 15-year-old forward JJ Gabriel earning his first senior squad call-up. Gabriel first gained widespread attention in April after scoring twice in a 25-minute debut for United's Under-18 side during a 13–1 victory over Leeds. The winger, who does not turn 16 until October, finished last season with 26 goals across all competitions for the Under-18 team. His inclusion marks recognition of substantial progress through the club's youth system, with director of football Jason Wilcox personally involved in securing his commitment to United last summer.

Squad Challenges and Preseason Progression

Carrick's preparations remain complicated by the absence of multiple first-team players recovering from World Cup participation and injuries. Striker Benjamin Sesko, goalkeeper Karl Darlow, and defender Matthijs de Ligt are sidelined, while striker Ethan Wheatley drops from the travelling party to make room for Gabriel. The Rosenborg fixture presents a stern test because the Norwegian side is competing midway through their domestic season and arrives fully match-fit. United follows this friendly with fixtures against Atlético Madrid in Stockholm on August 1 and Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg a week later, before concluding preseason against Leeds in the Republic of Ireland and Milan in Poland.
