Onana, now 30 years old, spent the previous campaign on loan at Trabzonspor following an unsuccessful period at Manchester United. The goalkeeper joined the Red Devils from Inter Milan in 2023 for £43.8 million but failed to establish himself as a reliable first-choice option. His contract with United extends through 2028, leaving two years remaining on his current agreement.

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan has made clear his club's intent to convert the temporary arrangement into a permanent signing. In recent statements, Dogan revealed that his side maintains daily contact with Onana and possesses the financial resources necessary to complete negotiations. "We speak with Onana every day. We won't have any financial difficulties," the president said, adding that Trabzonspor will pursue alternative goalkeeping options if talks with United break down.
