Marcus Allen Urges Raiders to Protect Ashton Jeanty from Backfield Penetration

Marcus Allen, an NFL legend and Super Bowl champion, has publicly called on the Las Vegas Raiders to prioritize protecting rookie running back Ashton Jeanty from defensive penetration in the backfield. The warning comes as the franchise enters a new era under head coach Klint Kubiak, who led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory as offensive coordinator.

Allen addressed the issue during an appearance on NFL Network, pointing to a specific vulnerability in Jeanty's rookie campaign. According to the Hall of Famer, the young running back absorbed more backfield hits than any other back in the league during the previous season—a trend that cannot continue if the Raiders hope to fully capitalize on his talent.

"I talk to Ashton every now and then," Allen stated. "The one Achilles' heel is penetration. He got hit in the backfield more than any back in the league last year. That is something that we can't allow to happen." Allen emphasized that creating cleaner rushing lanes would enable Jeanty to showcase the explosiveness that made him a first-round selection.

Jeanty's Rookie Performance Despite Adversity

Despite playing behind one of the league's least effective offensive lines, Jeanty delivered impressive numbers in his debut season. He led all NFL rookies with 975 rushing yards and 1,321 scrimmage yards, while adding 55 receptions. According to analytics, the Raiders' offensive line ranked last in the league with an impact score of 57.9. Jeanty also suffered an ankle injury in Week 12 but continued producing at a high level, demonstrating his resilience.

Kubiak's Offensive Philosophy and Future Direction

Kubiak's hiring signals the Raiders' commitment to offensive transformation. During his tenure with Seattle, he orchestrated a Super Bowl-winning offense that set franchise records for regular-season scoring. Allen expressed confidence that the new head coach possesses the expertise to improve conditions for Jeanty. "When he gets a little bit of an opening, he can be special," Allen noted, reflecting on Jeanty's potential when provided adequate blocking.

The Raiders have also reinforced their running back room by drafting Mike Washington Jr. in the fourth round of the recent draft. Washington, a 6-foot-2, 228-pound prospect from Arkansas, clocked the fastest 40-yard dash (4.33 seconds) among all running backs at the Combine. The team also added fullback Connor Heyward from the Pittsburgh Steelers and signed undrafted free agent Roman Hemby, creating a versatile backfield designed to complement the wide zone system favored by Kubiak.
