Baker traced his farming commitment back approximately two decades, explaining that even during his early career at Blue Peter in London, he maintained an active connection to rural life. At around age 20, he began establishing his own smallholding in the Chilterns region, acquiring sheep and a sheepdog from the Durham Dales to sustain his pastoral interests alongside his broadcasting work. He emphasized to Titchmarsh that this dual lifestyle remained consistent throughout his television career: "I needed it, and it's always been there as a big part of my life."

The shift toward full-time farming accelerated following a serious incident on his parents' farm. Baker recounted that his mother sustained a significant leg injury—fracturing her ankle—when a sheep inadvertently struck her while she was standing in a sheep pen. This incident prompted necessary changes to the farm's operations and management, which Baker addressed directly without hesitation.
