Matt Baker Reflects on Losing Border Collie Bob: "Grief Is the Price You Pay for Love"

Television presenter Matt Baker has publicly discussed the death of his border collie Bob, a dog he described as having been present for major moments in his life. The 48-year-old, known for hosting Countryfile and The One Show, delayed announcing Bob's passing for months because the loss proved emotionally difficult to process.

Baker, who maintains a small farm in the Chilterns Hills in Hertfordshire with his wife Nicola and their two children, shared his reflections on pet ownership and the bonds formed with animals. He currently shares his home with a miniature dachshund named Ivy and a young border collie called Ted. When discussing Bob's death, Baker expressed that the dog had been integral to numerous significant events across his life, making the absence particularly acute.

The presenter's connection to dogs extends far beyond his current household. During his childhood on a family farm, Baker trained his first sheepdog at age 13 and estimates he has owned more than 20 dogs throughout his lifetime. His most publicly recognised canine companion was Meg, a border collie who accompanied him throughout his seven-year tenure on Blue Peter, which began in 1999. When Baker relocated to London for the role, he felt compelled to acquire a dog, as he had never previously lived without one. Meg became an integral part of the show, with audiences witnessing her development from puppy to breeding dog, cementing her place in children's television history.

Baker has previously disclosed that he has ADHD and dyslexia, and animals served as therapeutic companions during his childhood before the formal concept of therapy dogs existed. In his recent interview, he characterised pets as more than mere possessions:
