Meredith Kercher's Sister Demands Edinburgh Fringe Cancel Amanda Knox Comedy Performance

The family of murdered British student Meredith Kercher has mounted a public campaign to prevent American Amanda Knox from performing a comedy show at Scotland's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Stephanie Kercher, the victim's sister, argues that Knox should not profit from a performance centered on her sister's death, while Knox maintains the show represents catharsis following her own legal ordeal.

The Case and Knox's Performance

Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old British student, was raped and murdered in Perugia, Italy, during 2007. Knox, who shared accommodation with Kercher at the time, became the primary suspect and faced two separate convictions for the killing. Italy's Supreme Court ultimately exonerated Knox in 2015, determining that evidence against her was insufficient. The actual murderer, Rudy Guede, was convicted separately for the crime.

Knox is scheduled to perform at the Gilded Balloon, an Edinburgh Fringe venue, from August 7 through August 17. Her show, titled Cartwheel, is described as examining how she will explain her story to her daughter, with marketing materials referencing "Mama Goes to Italy" and her determination about "being furious about the whole wrongful-imprisonment thing."

Family's Opposition and Public Petition

Stephanie Kercher expressed her objection in stark terms, stating: "Imagine 20 years after Meredith's death, your pain is turned into someone else's laughter." She contends that Knox continues to use her sister's name for personal financial gain through the performance. A formal petition initiated by family friend Sally Alington on Change.org has gathered more than 1,000 signatures supporting cancellation of the shows.

Kercher acknowledged the principle of free speech but argued that comedy surrounding rape and murder crosses an ethical boundary. She characterized her sister as an intelligent, witty person who would not find humor in such circumstances and framed the performance as contradicting broader efforts by women advocating for justice in cases of sexual violence.

Knox's Response

Knox has countered that Meredith would have appreciated the humor in her attempt to process a traumatic period. The distinction between the family's view of what Kercher would find acceptable and Knox's perspective remains central to the dispute.
