Mexican Football Club Owner Faces Money Laundering Investigation
Mexican authorities opened a criminal investigation into Piratas FC owner Jose Carlos Vives Gomez for suspected money laundering involving illicit funds.

Mexico's Federal Prosecutor's Office has opened a criminal investigation into Jose Carlos Vives Gomez, owner of Piratas FC, on suspicion of money laundering through a complex network of corporate entities. The investigation centers on alleged illicit financial operations spanning from 2022 through 2024, involving multiple individuals and businesses allegedly connected through interconnected corporate and financial structures.
Investigation Scope and Allegations
Authorities identified Vives Gomez in his capacity as partner and legal representative of CF Veracruzano, S.A. de C.V., a company linked to the Liga de Expansion club. Prosecutors are examining the origin, destination, and ultimate beneficiary of funds that allegedly moved through multiple ostensibly separate companies. The investigation focuses on whether this arrangement was designed to obscure the true flow of money and conceal who ultimately benefited from the operations.
The scheme reportedly involved dividing operational and asset control among different corporate entities, separating ownership of rights and assets tied to economic activities conducted by other companies. Rights associated with the operation of Luis Pirata Fuente Stadium—the home venue of Piratas FC—appear prominently in the investigation. Prosecutors flagged inconsistencies between the companies' apparent limited economic capacity and the actual value of transactions involving publicly related assets.
Investigative Methodology
The Federal Prosecutor's Office indicated that suspected inconsistencies will be verified through analysis of tax records, financial statements, asset declarations, and corporate documents belonging to all involved parties and businesses. The opening of an investigation file does not establish criminal liability but initiates formal proceedings to determine whether violations occurred. A separate proceeding initiated by state prosecutors in the State of Mexico is examining whether Piratas FC's logo is being used fraudulently or in violation of other laws.
Piratas FC simultaneously continues operational preparations, with the club announcing its official jersey presentation scheduled for July 30 at Luis Pirata Fuente Stadium, ahead of the club's 2026-27 season debut against Jaiba Brava on July 25.
