Mick Jagger Admits He Regrets Rejecting Chance to Meet Elvis Presley After Following John Lennon's Advice

Mick Jagger has expressed regret over declining an opportunity to meet Elvis Presley, attributing the decision to advice from John Lennon during a recent podcast appearance. The 82-year-old Rolling Stones frontman called the choice "really stupid" in retrospect, acknowledging he would have cherished an encounter with his musical hero.

Speaking on Conan O'Brien's podcast, Jagger recalled Lennon's explicit warning against meeting the King of Rock and Roll. "I remember John telling me, 'Yeah, you should never meet your heroes,'" Jagger explained. "So, I didn't. I took John's advice, which was really stupid of me, really. I mean, I would love to have met Elvis."

Why Lennon Discouraged the Meeting

Lennon's caution stemmed from his own underwhelming experience with Presley. The Beatles met Presley at his mansion in Bel Air, Los Angeles, during their 1965 U.S. tour. What was meant to be a historic encounter between two musical giants proved disappointing, particularly for Lennon, who had idolized Presley before the meeting.

Beatles press officer Tony Barrow later recalled the awkward atmosphere. Lennon, upon meeting Presley, immediately questioned the singer about abandoning rock and roll for film soundtracks. The initial tension was palpable—George Harrison remembered the band "fell out the car in hysterics" upon arrival, behavior that reportedly irritated Presley, who threatened to leave if they continued staring at him. Lennon allegedly compared Presley's mansion to a "nightclub," further exacerbating the discomfort through his stream of questions.

The encounter only improved when Presley had guitars brought out and the musicians began jamming together. Yet Lennon's disappointment lingered, and he frequently recounted the experience to Jagger with evident frustration. Barrow noted that Lennon found the meeting "about as exciting as meeting Engelbert Humperdinck"—a stark contrast to his pre-meeting reverence for Presley.

Protecting His Own Image of Elvis

Jagger's reasoning for heeding Lennon's advice reveals a desire to preserve his personal connection to Presley's legacy. "I wanted to keep my Elvis to myself, my version of Elvis," Jagger told O'Brien. "I didn't want my version of Elvis shattered like John's was. But maybe my Elvis version would have been different." This sentiment reflects how Lennon's disappointment shaped Jagger's protective stance toward his own artistic hero worship, ultimately leading him to avoid a chance that might have altered his lifelong admiration for the iconic musician.
