Microsoft Removes Major Titles from Game Pass as Subscriber Exodus Accelerates

Microsoft is removing eight titles from Xbox Game Pass on July 31, including the critically acclaimed platformer Celeste and medieval strategy game Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord. Subscribers have until the end of July to purchase any departing games at discounts of at least 20%. The removals mark the latest in an ongoing cycle of content rotation on the subscription service, which regularly cycles titles to manage licensing agreements.

Games Departing Game Pass

The confirmed departures include Celeste, Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, Sniper Elite: Resistance, Crusader Kings 3, and Rain World, according to markings in the official Xbox mobile app. All eight titles remain available across console, PC, and cloud gaming platforms until July 31. Crusader Kings 3 and Whiskerwood currently carry larger discounts through the Xbox Summer Sale, offering players additional savings beyond the standard 20% removal discount.

Celeste stands out as one of the most recognizable departures, having earned widespread critical acclaim as a pixel-art platformer since its original release. Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, a medieval action-strategy hybrid, similarly represents a significant loss for subscribers interested in complex, long-form gaming experiences.

Broader Subscription Changes

The removals occur alongside broader changes to the Xbox ecosystem. More than 20 new games are scheduled to launch on Xbox between July 20 and July 24, providing replacement options for departing subscribers. Microsoft has also expanded the Xbox handheld compatibility program to include 40 additional titles, extending Game Pass value to portable gaming devices.

Players who purchase any of the departing games retain permanent access after removal from the subscription service. This mirrors Microsoft's standard practice, where Game Pass serves as a discovery mechanism rather than the only way to access titles.
