Millions of UK Football Fans Risk Missing Live Matches Due to Broadband Failures on ITVX
A broadband analysis shows 30 million UK football fans face buffering problems while watching ITVX World Cup coverage tonight.

Over 30 million UK football fans risk experiencing buffering and interruptions during World Cup matches on ITVX and BBC iPlayer, according to new broadband speed data. The research reveals severe regional disparities, with the South West of England and parts of Scotland falling far below the 25 Mbps required for smooth 4K streaming.

Regional Connectivity Crisis
An analysis of broadband speed tests across the past 12 months has exposed a digital divide threatening tonight's opening matches. Kirkwall in Scotland emerges as the most vulnerable location, with just 70.1 per cent of homes capable of reaching recommended streaming speeds. Llandrindod in Wales (73.2 per cent) and Perth (73.3 per cent) follow closely behind.
The South West of England faces the most acute challenge nationally. More than one in five households in the region—21.8 per cent—fall below the required speed threshold, despite 54 per cent of residents planning to watch live coverage. Truro, Exeter, Torquay and Plymouth all rank among the UK's ten worst locations for streaming connectivity. Scotland similarly struggles, with Kirkwall, Perth, Aberdeen and Dumfries all featured in the bottom ten performers.
Northern Strongholds Better Equipped
In contrast, football-dominated regions in the North West demonstrate significantly stronger infrastructure. Manchester and Liverpool boast over 84 per cent of households equipped with adequate speeds for uninterrupted streaming. This geographic inequality means supporters in wealthier, better-connected areas will enjoy seamless viewing while rural and regional fans contend with lag and buffering.
Multiple Devices Compound the Problem
The connectivity challenge intensifies as viewing habits evolve. Nearly half of fans (46 per cent) plan to use a second screen simultaneously, while 32 per cent expect three or more devices online during matches. This unprecedented demand on home routers threatens to overwhelm already-strained broadband connections. A broadband expert at Uswitch warned that discovering connection problems during live matches represents the worst possible timing, urging supporters to run speed tests before kick-off. Additionally, 35 per cent of fans report having already experienced major tournament moments spoiled by broadcast lags and poor connections during previous tournaments.
