Mudryk Cleared to Return to Football After Court Overturns Chelsea Winger's Doping Ban
Chelsea winger Mudryk has been cleared to return to football immediately following a Court of Arbitration decision on his doping case.

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been released from his doping suspension and is eligible to compete immediately, following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that partially upheld his appeal against a four-year ban. The Ukrainian international accepted responsibility for breaching anti-doping rules and agreed to a suspension period equal to the time already served since his provisional suspension in December 2024.
How the Case Unfolded
Mudryk tested positive for meldonium, a banned substance, during an out-of-competition control conducted on 22 October 2024. The Football Association notified him of the adverse finding on 4 December 2024 and immediately imposed a provisional suspension, preventing him from participating in any competitive matches. In May 2025, the FA formally charged him with anti-doping rule violations, and an independent regulatory commission hearing took place in January 2026.
The commission concluded that Mudryk had committed the violations and imposed the maximum four-year ban. However, his legal team pursued an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, contending the circumstances warranted reconsideration.
The Decisive Factor: Updated Testing Standards
A critical development emerged during the appeal process: the World Anti-Doping Agency updated its technical documentation (TD2027MRL), establishing new threshold standards for meldonium detection. Under these revised guidelines, the concentration of meldonium found in Mudryk's sample would not trigger a positive result, and no violations would have been recorded had the test been conducted under current standards.
The FA and Mudryk reached a resolution with the agreement of the World Anti-Doping Agency on 30 July 2026. As part of the settlement, Mudryk acknowledged his commission of the violations while accepting a period of ineligibility calculated from his provisional suspension date. This calculation meant his actual time away from competition already satisfied the penalty requirement.
Return to Action
Chelsea expressed readiness to reintegrate Mudryk into the squad, stating the club looks forward to bringing him back to full fitness and returning him to competitive play. He will participate in the club's pre-season preparations. Mudryk has not featured in a competitive match since November 2024, representing an absence of approximately eight months from active football.
