Naguib Sawiris' Giza Plateau Modernization Sparks Dispute Over Stadium Events Plans
Billionaire Naguib Sawiris announced a $10 million injection into Giza Plateau modernization for year-round events and concerts.

Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris has faced contradiction regarding his development plans for the Giza Plateau, with reports detailing a $10 million investment for sporting events and concerts, followed by his denial of stadium construction plans at the iconic archaeological site. The conflicting statements have created uncertainty around one of Egypt's most visible tourism modernization projects, which has already committed approximately $41 million in total spending since 2018.
The Reported Investment and Vision
According to initial reports, Sawiris' Orascom Pyramids Entertainment announced an additional 500 million Egyptian pounds ($10 million) to transform the Giza Plateau into a year-round destination hosting major concerts, sporting events, and premium tourism experiences. The plan included procurement of 30 electric hop-on, hop-off buses and construction of a 15,000-seat open-air sports pavilion to accommodate large-scale gatherings.
The redevelopment initiative originated from a 2018 public-private partnership between the Egyptian government and Orascom Pyramids Entertainment. Under the agreement structure, the government retains all pyramid entry ticket revenue, while the private operator generates income through VIP tours, restaurant operations, commercial leases, sponsorships, and event hosting. Orascom Pyramids Executive Chairman Amr Gazarin projected that concerts and sporting events alone could generate approximately 200 million Egyptian pounds ($4.1 million) in annual revenue, with the business expected to reach operational break-even by 2027.
The Denial and Uncertainty
Sawiris directly contradicted these reports through his official social media account, stating that neither he nor any company representatives made statements regarding stadium or events area construction on the Giza Pyramids plateau. His denial creates significant ambiguity around the scope and timeline of the modernization project, which still operates under a decade-long agreement with Egyptian authorities.
Tourism Recovery Context
The project developments coincide with Egypt's strongest tourism recovery in years. The country welcomed approximately 19 million visitors in 2025, making it Africa's second-most visited destination after Morocco, with authorities targeting 20 million arrivals in 2026. Before Orascom's involvement, the Giza Plateau attracted roughly 2.5 million annual visitors; the company aims to nearly double that figure.
