Netflix has canceled The Boroughs after one season, halting the Duffer Brothers-produced science fiction series despite strong critical reviews and preliminary plans for multiple additional seasons. The decision reflects viewership performance that fell short of expectations following its premiere, prompting the streamer to abandon the show rather than proceed with already-discussed back-to-back filming of seasons two and three.

Viewership Decline Triggered Cancellation

The Boroughs debuted to favorable critical reviews but struggled with audience engagement. The series opened with 5.6 million views across its first weekend, a modest figure given its prominent creators and release following the finale of Stranger Things. The show climbed to 9.5 million views in its opening full week, but then dropped sharply to 3.7 million views the following week, signaling that momentum would not sustain the series long-term. This trajectory became a determining factor in Netflix's renewal calculus.

The production carried substantial costs due to its elaborate special effects, star-studded ensemble cast, and high-profile pedigree. The cast included Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, and Alice Kremelberg. Netflix weighs production expense against sustained viewership when making renewal decisions, and The Boroughs' declining weekly numbers proved insufficient to justify continuation.

Behind the Cancellation

The series was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and positioned as a spiritual successor to Stranger Things, following a group of unlikely heroes in a retirement community confronting an otherworldly threat. The cancellation came as a surprise to industry observers, as preliminary discussions had already addressed multi-season production and a Season 2 writers room had commenced operations—a standard step for high-profile renewals.

The Boroughs represents the second paranormal series produced by the Duffer Brothers to launch in recent months without renewal. A companion project titled Something Very Bad is Going to Happening, classified as a limited series, also will not continue. The Duffer Brothers themselves departed Netflix for a substantial film and television deal at Paramount, leaving the streamer with only the animated limited series Stranger Things: Tales from '85 from their production slate.
