Netflix Documentary Subject Nirmal Purja Dies in Pakistan Avalanche with Nine Others

Nirmal Purja, the renowned mountaineer who gained international recognition through a 2021 Netflix documentary, has been confirmed dead in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. Ten climbers perished when an avalanche swept down the 8,047-meter peak's main west-facing gulley on July 30, according to his company Elite Expeditions and Pakistan's Alpine Club.

The Climber and His Record

Purja, 43, was a British-Nepali mountaineer and former British Army officer who became internationally famous in 2019 for completing an extraordinary feat: scaling all 14 of the world's highest peaks in just over six months. His accomplishments formed the basis of the Netflix documentary that introduced him to global audiences. His brother Kamal paid tribute, stating: "We will miss you every single day" and emphasizing that "your legacy will live forever."

The Disaster and Conditions

The avalanche struck at approximately 9 a.m. local time, sweeping climbers up to a vertical mile down the mountain. Elite Expeditions confirmed the deaths "with profound sadness and immense heartbreak." Among the 10 confirmed victims were American climber Mallory Geis, Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy from Oman, and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal. Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah reported that six Nepalese and four other foreign climbers died in the disaster.

The tragedy occurred despite warning signs that preceded the incident. Heavy snowfall began around July 22, prompting most expedition teams at base camp to depart. Other mountaineers, including climbers David Klein and Ian Overton, assessed the conditions as too dangerous and evacuated by July 25. Why Purja's team elected to remain on the mountain has not yet been disclosed. Naila Kiani, a spokesperson for the Alpine Club of Pakistan, described Purja as "a very experienced climber and fearless," acknowledging his extensive leadership of previous expeditions.

International Response

Purja's death drew reactions from high-ranking officials. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting described him as "an inspirational man" whose mountaineering adventures were "known the world over." Nepal's government mourned the loss of the record-holder and his companions, with the prime minister noting that their "courage, dedication, and contributions will always remain inspiring."
