Netflix has advanced the theatrical release of its Cannes prize-winning drama La Bola Negra to October 16, providing the film with a 47-day exclusive cinema window—the longest theatrical run the streamer has ever granted to a feature. The film will transition to the Netflix platform on December 2, marking a significant shift in the company's awards strategy. Directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known collectively as Los Javis, shared the Best Director award at Cannes, competing alongside Pawel Pawlikowski for Fatherland.

Theatrical Expansion and Release Strategy

The new October 16 start date represents a three-week acceleration from the initially announced November 6 platform release. This extended theatrical window surpasses the 30-day window Netflix granted to Noah Baumbach's acclaimed film Marriage Story in 2019, positioning La Bola Negra as a flagship title in the streamer's cinematic ambitions. The film will receive its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Oscar-winning cast member Penelope Cruz will be honored with a Special Tribute Award.

Netflix has also acquired Canadian distribution rights to the film, securing its presence across North American markets. The expanded commitment signals a deliberate investment in prestige cinema, particularly for a narrative centered on LGBTQ+ representation across Spanish history.

Film Details and Cast

The drama, inspired by an unfinished work by Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, explores the interconnected lives of three men across three distinct time periods: 1932, 1937, and 2017. The ensemble cast features Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente making his acting debut, Elite actor Miguel Bernardeau, Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz, Glenn Close, and supporting performers including Lola Duenas, Carlos González, Julio Torres, and Milo Quifes.

Los Javis co-wrote the screenplay with Alberto Conejero and produced the film alongside Jorge Pezzi. The directors stated their intention to honor generations whose sacrifice enabled contemporary LGBTQ+ freedoms, positioning the film's narrative within a broader historical and cultural context spanning the Spanish Civil War and Franco era through modern times.
