New York City Maps Spark Backlash Over Omitted Italian, Jewish, and Irish Neighborhoods
The city has committed to updating the maps to include the overlooked communities. He demanded the mayor show respect to those who built the city.

New York City officials faced significant criticism after releasing a map highlighting 30 immigrant communities across five boroughs while omitting Little Italy, along with historic Jewish and Irish neighborhoods. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Friday that the city would revise the map to include the excluded areas.
The Map's Initial Scope and Omissions
The "New York City Immigrant Enclaves" map, created in 2023 and distributed as part of a tourism guide during the World Cup, highlighted neighborhoods including Koreatown, Little Pakistan, Little Yemen, and three separate Chinatowns. However, the publication generated immediate backlash when residents and community organizations discovered that Little Italy—one of Manhattan's most recognizable cultural districts—had been excluded. Beyond Little Italy, the map also failed to recognize historic Jewish communities in Brooklyn, Irish neighborhoods, and Sri Lankan enclaves on Staten Island.
Public Response and Political Reaction
Actor Robert Davi, born in Astoria, Queens, publicly condemned the oversight in a video posted to social media, calling the mayor a "jerk" for disrespecting Italian Americans. Davi, known for roles in films including "Die Hard" and "Licence to Kill," referenced his family's immigrant heritage, noting that his grandparents arrived from Sicily and Naples and that his grandfather served in World War I. He demanded the mayor show respect to those who built the city. Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella, also an Italian American, issued a statement saying "ignorance is not a good ingredient for highlighting the sacrifices of so many who built this City and gave so much."
Former Mayor Eric Adams's office denied responsibility for the oversight, while current Mayor Mamdani acknowledged the map was not exhaustive and committed to future revisions. Mamdani stated that the city inherited the 2023 map and had added a few neighborhoods before releasing it, but emphasized that more than 200 ethnic communities exist across the five boroughs. Ferrara Bakery, operating in Little Italy since 1892, represents the deep-rooted Italian heritage now recognized for inclusion on updated materials.
