Nigeria Sets Mandatory Commonwealth Games 2026 Trials in Lagos with Strict Sprint Standards

Nigeria's Athletics Federation has declared participation in national trials compulsory for all athletes pursuing selection to the commonwealth games 2026, with the decisive competition set to take place in Lagos from June 20-22 at Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex. The three-day championship will determine Nigeria's track and field representatives for Glasgow, featuring 32 events across men's and women's categories. The federation has implemented a tiered qualification system: athletes competing in sprint events—100 metres, 200 metres, and 400 metres—must meet prescribed performance standards established during the qualification period, while all other disciplines remain open for participation.

Mandatory Selection Process and Logistics

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, under President Chief Tonobok Okowa, positioned the trials as integral to the nation's preparation strategy for the commonwealth games 2026. Athletes are expected to arrive in Lagos on June 19, with departure scheduled for June 23. To support competitors who have achieved the required qualifying standards, the federation announced that accommodation will be provided throughout the event. The official roster of eligible athletes has not yet been disclosed but is expected to be released shortly.

Federation officials emphasized that the strict sprint qualification benchmarks are designed to guarantee high-calibre competition in those events while preserving inclusive participation across other disciplines. Maxwell Kumoye, AFN Media Committee Chairman, communicated the mandatory participation requirement, signalling the beginning of an intensive qualification campaign. Gabriel Okon, an ex-international athlete leading the AFN's technical committee, oversaw the development of qualifying standards applicable to both domestic athletes and those competing from overseas.

Support and Strategic Context

AFN President Okowa expressed confidence that the competition would identify Nigeria's strongest talents ahead of the Games and commended the National Sports Commission for its sustained support of athletics development and elite athlete performance. The federation issued formal letters of invitation to state directors of sports, state athletics association chairs, coaches, managers, and military and para-military athletics bodies, encouraging widespread participation and stakeholder engagement throughout the country.
