Nigerian Naira Strengthens Against Dollar as Foreign Reserves Hit 17-Year Peak
The currency's resilience through the year has outperformed analyst expectations despite global economic uncertainty.

Nigeria's naira gained ground against the dollar in recent trading sessions, supported by climbing foreign reserves and improved liquidity conditions. The Central Bank of Nigeria reported the naira appreciated to N1,362.09 per dollar, while parallel market rates showed the currency strengthening to N1,410 per dollar. The nation's external reserves reached $52.03 billion, marking a 17-year high and representing a 35.6 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Market Performance and Reserve Growth
The naira's recent gains reflect broader economic developments within Africa's largest economy. On the official foreign exchange market, the currency appreciated by N5.67 on a single day and N18.19 on a week-on-week basis. The parallel market showed similar strength, with the naira gaining N10 per dollar during the same period. These movements occurred alongside a significant expansion in Nigeria's foreign reserves, which provide the central bank with capacity to defend the currency and meet external obligations.
Analysts at Coronation Merchant Bank noted that the naira has demonstrated unexpected resilience during the first half of the year. The bank had projected an average exchange rate of N1,382 per dollar for the period, yet the currency instead averaged approximately N1,365 per dollar. This outperformance stems from multiple factors: recovering crude oil production, consistent foreign capital inflows, and the improved foreign exchange liquidity that has characterized recent months.
Divergence Between Official and Parallel Markets
While the official market showed strength, a widening gap emerged between official and parallel market rates. The spread between the two markets expanded to 2.93 percent from 1.8 percent on the previous day, as the parallel market lagged behind official market gains. Trading volume in the interbank segment declined by 19.76 percent to $334.13 million, with deal numbers falling to 122 from 198 the previous day. Despite this slowdown in activity, earlier in the week the foreign exchange market had recorded stronger engagement, with transaction numbers rising 33.23 percent on July 22.
Year-to-Date Outlook
The performance of the naira in recent months has exceeded initial projections from financial institutions. Coronation Merchant Bank's forecast for year-end has projected the exchange rate at N1,456 per dollar, though the currency's sustained strength may influence this outlook. Analysts cite the combination of crude oil sector improvements, foreign direct investment inflows, and central bank liquidity management as supporting factors for the naira's stability against broader regional currency pressures.
