A collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation has produced a visually striking satellite image of East Antarctica that resembles a hummingbird, revealing previously hidden details about glacier movement and ice dynamics beneath the continent's surface. The image, captured by NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar), shows Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja mountain in unprecedented detail through advanced radar technology that penetrates snow and ice layers invisible to traditional optical sensors.
What the Image Reveals
What appears at first glance as a colorful bird emerges from the interplay of ice, rock, and flowing glaciers. The mountain's summit forms the dark "belly" of the apparent hummingbird, while a stream of ice extending northeast toward the ocean creates the "tail." The feather-like patterns radiating outward are actually crevasses—deep fractures in the glacier created as ice flows downward and spreads across the mountain's surface.
Seongsu Jeong, the signal analysis engineer who produced the image at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, explained the significance: radar instruments can observe properties of Antarctic ice fundamentally different from what optical imagery shows, allowing researchers to see "what's hidden beneath the surface."
Breaking New Ground in Earth Observation
NISAR's L-band radar capability represents a technological leap in planetary monitoring. NASA's Earth Science Division director described it as "the most sophisticated radar we've ever built" during pre-launch briefing.
