The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls opened in 2007 in the village of Henley-on-Klip, south of Johannesburg, following Winfrey's meeting with former South African President Nelson Mandela in 2002. Built at a cost of $40 million, the expansive campus featured two theatres, a yoga studio, and a beauty salon. Over its operational lifetime, the school has graduated more than 1,000 girls from underprivileged backgrounds, establishing itself as a leader in educational access for young women in the region.

The Transition and Future Model

Students currently enrolled at the academy who have not yet graduated will receive full scholarships to attend other top-tier schools, with tuition covered entirely through their graduation. The provincial government will assume control of the campus facility after 2027 and continue operating it as a school, preserving the institution's legacy while serving new students.
