Pakistan Drops Mohammad Rizwan From Australia ODI Series After Performance Decline
Mohammad Rizwan has been excluded from Pakistan's upcoming ODI series against Australia following a sharp decline in form.

Mohammad Rizwan has been dropped from Pakistan's ODI squad for the three-match series against Australia, with the Pakistan Cricket Board citing recent form concerns and the need to develop younger players ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed speculation that the exclusion signals the end of Rizwan's international career, emphasizing that exclusion does not equate to permanent retirement from the game.

Performance Issues Drive Selection Decision
Rizwan's removal from the squad follows a difficult stretch across multiple competitions. During Pakistan's recent ODI series against Bangladesh in March, the wicketkeeper-batter aggregated just 54 runs across three matches at an average of 19.33. His performance in the Pakistan Super League proved similarly underwhelming, where he managed 204 runs in 10 matches with a strike rate of 116.57 and failed to record a single half-century while captaining Rawalpindi to just one victory in their inaugural campaign. His maiden Big Bash League campaign also delivered disappointing results.
These consecutive failures across formats prompted selectors to replace him in the ODI setup. The three-match series between Pakistan and Australia begins on May 30, with the first encounter scheduled in Rawalpindi and the remaining fixtures in Lahore.
Youth Development and Captaincy Transition
Ghazi Ghori and Rohail Nazir have been named as the two wicketkeepers for the series, with Nazir making his ODI debut despite limited international exposure. The uncapped Nazir has appeared in three T20 internationals. At the pre-series press conference, Shaheen acknowledged that the selection changes form part of a broader strategy to test different combinations ahead of the World Cup, scheduled for South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in 2027.
Shaheen's comments directly addressed concerns that Rizwan's career trajectory had reached its conclusion. The captain referenced his own recent omission and subsequent return to the side, as well as Babar Azam's reintegration into the team following a period outside the squad. "No player's career can be finished by you or by me," Shaheen stated, emphasizing that performance and hard work determine future opportunities rather than a single selection decision.
Injury Setbacks Affect Squad Depth
Beyond Rizwan's exclusion, openers Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub remain unavailable due to ongoing injury rehabilitation. Both players last featured in ODIs during Sri Lanka's tour of Pakistan in November 2025. The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that both continue recovery programs under medical supervision and have been ruled out from the Australia series. Sahibzada Farhan and Maaz Sadaqat, who both made their ODI debuts against Bangladesh earlier this year, are expected to occupy the opening positions against Australia.
