Patrick Dempsey Declines Senate Run in Maine After Party Seeks Replacement for Embattled Nominee

Patrick Dempsey, the actor best known for playing neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy, has publicly declined to run for the U.S. Senate in Maine despite his name circulating as a potential replacement for embattled Democratic nominee Graham Platner. In a Wednesday op-ed, the Maine native explained that he determined his answer to serving in Congress was no, citing his belief that he can make a greater impact through his existing career and charitable work.

The Decision
Dempsey addressed the speculation directly in an essay published by the Portland Press Herald, acknowledging that he had received multiple inquiries about entering the Senate race and gave the proposal serious consideration. He described the question as flattering and noted his deep connection to Maine and concern about the nation's direction. However, after reflection, he concluded that public service in Congress was not the right path for him at this time.
The actor emphasized that his refusal did not stem from any lack of respect for public service itself, which he called "absolutely" honorable. Rather, he determined that his existing platform and commitments—particularly through the Dempsey Center, a nonprofit supporting cancer patients in honor of his mother who died in 2014—represented a more effective avenue for contribution.
Context in Maine's Senate Race
Dempsey's statement arrives as the Maine Democratic Party navigates significant upheaval surrounding Platner's candidacy. A new allegation of sexual assault against Platner, which he denies, prompted even his staunchest congressional supporters to withdraw endorsements. Party leadership has indicated that Platner's campaign will have no role in selecting his potential successor, though the campaign has stated it merely sought to understand the replacement process.
Democratic polling conducted by Tavern Research had previously identified Dempsey alongside other potential contenders, including former state Senate President Troy Jackson and Nirav Shah, a former director of Maine's Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Jackson filed exploratory paperwork on Tuesday to pursue the nomination. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who ran in the state's Democratic gubernatorial primary, also indicated she would seriously consider entering the Senate race if Platner withdraws. Other figures including state Rep. Valli Geiger and state House Speaker Ryan Fecteau have signaled interest without confirming campaigns.
