Phillies Send Andrew Painter to Minor Leagues and Weigh Options to Fill Rotation Spot
The Phillies optioned Andrew Painter to Triple-A Lehigh Valley following struggles that produced a 7.06 ERA over 65 major-league innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies optioned top pitching prospect Andrew Painter to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after his major-league debut failed to meet expectations. The organization now faces the task of restructuring its starting rotation mid-season while determining when the 23-year-old will return to competition.
The Painter Decision
Painter's first stint in the majors produced disappointing results, including a 7.06 earned-run average through his first 65 innings pitched. After Wednesday's loss to Miami, the Phillies decided the former top prospect needed a reset in the minor leagues. Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations, acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but noted that the organization has successfully sent down highly regarded pitchers before who returned to perform well.
Painter will not pitch in a game for seven to ten days upon his arrival in Lehigh Valley. Instead, he will participate in additional bullpen sessions to work on his mechanics, particularly his fastball, which has not generated sufficient velocity against major-league hitters. The pitcher expressed understanding of the move, telling management he recognized the need to improve rather than questioning the demotion.
Filling the Rotation Gap
The Phillies face immediate pressure to identify a fifth starter as they prepare for upcoming series against Washington and other opponents. The team has limited options, as starting pitching depth remains an organizational weakness. General manager Preston Mattingly indicated no timeline has been established for Painter's return, describing his status as "TBD."
Three primary candidates have emerged to fill the void. Bryse Wilson, a 28-year-old right-handed pitcher with 57 career starts, was called up to take Painter's roster spot. Wilson threw 29 scoreless innings in relief against the Mets on Thursday and could start on short rest if needed. Alan Rangel, Lehigh Valley's most consistent starter this season, posted a 3.99 earned-run average across 14 games with 11 starts and would be available on regular rest. The Phillies also retain the option of deploying a bullpen game using an opener followed by a bulk pitcher.
Rotation Restructuring
Interim manager Don Mattingly confirmed the team will temporarily rearrange its pitching schedule to manage workload. Following Zack Wheeler's start at home against the Mets, Jesus Luzardo will shift back one day in the rotation to prevent overtaxing the bullpen. This adjustment keeps Aaron Nola and Christopher Sánchez, the team's co-aces, properly spaced. The fifth-starter position will cycle through the available candidates multiple times before Painter potentially returns later in the season.
