American winners, by contrast, face a more complex decision.

In the United States, a $663 million jackpot winner selecting the immediate cash option receives $290.4 million before federal withholding. After a mandatory 24% federal withholding is applied, this reduces to $220.7 million. However, winners typically face a federal marginal tax rate as high as 37%, further reducing the net payout to approximately $182.9 million. Those selecting the 30-year annuity option receive annual payments of $22.1 million, which similarly decline to around $13.92 million after the 37% federal marginal rate applies.

State residence significantly impacts final winnings. Locations including New York impose additional lottery taxes at 10.9%, while Texas, Florida, and California levy no state lottery taxes, preserving more of the federal payout for residents in those jurisdictions.

UK Expansion and Market Growth

The Powerball expansion into the United Kingdom began recently and is expected to generate faster-growing jackpots through increased ticket sales contributing to the prize fund. The National Lottery manages the UK offering, with players able to participate in drawings previously exclusive to North American participants.

This expansion comes as Mega Millions has surged to $800 million in its current drawing cycle.
