Prince Albert of Monaco Visits Spain for Historic Diplomatic Milestone Celebration
The two couples toured exhibitions at Madrid's Royal Botanical Garden and attended a working lunch at Zarzuela Palace.

Prince Albert of Monaco completed a significant diplomatic visit to Spain alongside Princess Charlene, marking 150 years since Monaco established its first official diplomatic mission in the country on July 14, 1876. The two-day trip saw the Monégasque royals welcomed by King Felipe and Queen Letizia for exhibitions and official meetings in Madrid.

The Royal Engagement
The diplomatic visit commenced with a working lunch hosted by King Felipe for Prince Albert at Zarzuela Palace. Later that afternoon, both couples reunited at Madrid's Royal Botanical Garden, where they toured two exhibitions mounted by the Monaco Embassy. One exhibition traced five centuries of shared cultural and diplomatic history between the two nations, while the second showcased contemporary artistic work from Monaco.
Princess Charlene's attendance marked a notable occasion—her first ever official working visit to Spain in her nearly 15 years as a member of the Monégasque royal family, having married Prince Albert in July 2011.
Historical Context
The Royal Botanical Garden itself carries considerable historical significance. Established in 1781 under architects Francesco Sabatini and Juan de Villanueva during the reign of King Charles III of Spain, it was originally conceived as a center for botanical science with a focus on plant species from Spanish colonial territories. Though it fell into disrepair during the Spanish War of Independence in 1808, restoration efforts occurred over the following fifty years, and it has operated under the Spanish National Research Council since 1939.
This meeting was not the first between the two royal families. Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, Prince Albert's parents, visited Spain on multiple occasions for official engagements spanning from the 1950s through the 1980s, and also attended the 1962 wedding of King Felipe's parents, Juan Carlos and Sofia. Princess Caroline, Prince Albert's sister, represented the Grimaldi family at the 2004 wedding of Felipe and Letizia when they were still the Prince and Princess of Asturias.
