Prof Jason Arday Resigns from Cambridge Following Plagiarism Investigation

Cambridge University sociology professor Jason Arday has resigned with immediate effect after the institution launched an investigation into plagiarism allegations and questions about his academic credentials. Arday, who became the youngest Black professor appointed in Cambridge's history at age 37 in 2023, said the relentless public scrutiny had become unbearable for himself and his family.

In a statement released through the Good Law Project on Wednesday, Arday confirmed his departure from both the University of Cambridge and Jesus College, where he held a fellowship. He described his professorship appointment as "without question, the greatest professional privilege of my life," but acknowledged that years since his appointment had been "marked by an unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack." Arday emphasized that his resignation should not be interpreted as acceptance of the accusations surrounding him, nor as a loss of faith in scholarship.

Background to the Allegations

The controversy began when Nathan Cofnas, a former Cambridge academic sacked from his role in 2024, identified what he claimed were numerous instances of plagiarism in Arday's work and questioned some of his stated achievements. The Guardian subsequently published an investigation uncovering discrepancies in Arday's public accounts, including claims about fundraising accomplishments and encounters with masked intruders. Earlier allegations centered on plagiarism in Arday's PhD thesis and other academic research. An investigation by Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his doctorate in 2015, declined to uphold plagiarism charges but attributed the issues to "honest and reasonable error."

Arday has consistently denied plagiarism accusations and insisted he is not "a liar." Cambridge initially defended him as a victim of a vile campaign, but shifted position as questions multiplied about his own claims and university leaders grew concerned about institutional reputation damage. The university launched a formal inquiry following new information about Arday's qualifications and honorary appointments, with additional ongoing complaints regarding academic misconduct under review. Jesus College initiated a parallel investigation process.

Impact and Future

Arday's resignation may derail publication of his memoir "Great and Unfortunate Things," which Simon & Schuster had been preparing to release alongside planned publicity tours. In his statement, Arday said he requires "time to heal" and indicated his departure from Cambridge is not permanent, adding "when that time comes, I will return."
