Rebecca Yarros has officially announced Threshing Day, a new 13-story anthology set within the Fourth Wing universe, releasing on September 29, 2026. The collection will showcase multiple characters' perspectives during Threshing Day—a pivotal moment for dragon rider cadets—and includes an illustration-rich deluxe edition featuring 16 full-colour pieces by artist Joe Requeza. Importantly, this is not Book 4 of the Empyrean series, despite being the fourth published work, and serves as a companion to the main narrative.

What Threshing Day Contains

The anthology departs from the traditional format of Fourth Wing novels by shifting focus away from protagonist Violet Sorrengail. Instead, thirteen separate narratives explore how various characters experienced their own Threshing Day—the dangerous rite of passage where cadets officially join the Riders Quadrant. Among the stories is an entry centred on Xaden, a character readers have closely followed throughout the series.

Yarros announced the project on July 15 through her Instagram account, where she shared plot details and quotes from the forthcoming collection. The deluxe edition illustrations have been handled by Joe Requeza, whose previous fantasy credits include work on titles such as The Light of Mezzara and The Lord of the East. The author has also indicated that Xaden's Threshing story will eventually be made available on her website at a later date, providing additional content beyond the printed anthology.

The September 29 release date comes after months of fan speculation, with Yarros teasing the announcement beginning in early July. She confirmed the revelation would occur on July 15—a deliberate reference to "Conscription Day" in the Fourth Wing fictional universe, the date when cadets officially enter the Riders Quadrant.
