She stated: "When I started writing, I was quietly drowning inside my own life as a doctor...Inside, I felt robotic and flat and like I'd somehow abandoned myself." Anderson's first draft was basic, but through studying craft extensively and working with mentors at the BookEnds Fellowship, she refined the manuscript significantly.
