Robert Downey Jr. has made his official Marvel Cinematic Universe return—not as Tony Stark, but as the primary antagonist in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor's debut as Doctor Doom was revealed through exclusive Hall H footage at San Diego Comic-Con, with the full trailer subsequently accumulating 503 million views within its first 24 hours. The blockbuster ensemble film arrives in theaters on December 18 and unites characters spanning the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and Thunderbolts franchises.

The Villain at Center Stage

Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, also known as Victor von Doom, commands the narrative from his throne in the footage shown to convention attendees. The character sports a green cloak and metallic mask while delivering warnings about impending catastrophe. Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm—the Invisible Woman—provides context through narration, explaining that Doom has been fundamentally broken by loss. "Everything he loved was taken from him," she states, hinting at a complicated shared history between Doom and the Fantastic Four.

The trailer establishes Doom's formidable power when Chris Hemsworth's Thor confronts him directly. Doom effortlessly catches and discards Mjolnir, then deploys his magical abilities against the god of thunder before summoning an army of Sentinel robots—the iconic androids from previous X-Men films—from beneath the ground. Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards confronts Doom about responsibility for the destruction of New York City reduced to rubble across the footage.

An Unprecedented Ensemble

The trailer features an expansive cast assembling to counter the threat. Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers for the first time since 2019's Avengers: Endgame, notably wielding Mjolnir at the film's conclusion. Chris Hemsworth reprises Thor alongside Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, who now carries the Captain America mantle following his solo outing in Captain America: Brave New World. Additional heroes visible in the footage include Simu Liu's Shang-Chi, Letitia Wright's Black Panther, Tom Hiddleston's Loki, James Marsden's Cyclops and Ian McKellen's Magneto.

The Fantastic Four lineup comprises Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
