Robert Lewandowski Joins Chicago Fire as Major League Soccer Makes Blockbuster Signing
The striker will pair with Golden Boot leader Hugo Cuypers as the Fire pursue their first MLS Cup since returning to the playoffs last year.

Poland's all-time leading scorer Robert Lewandowski has signed with Chicago Fire on a Designated Player contract through 2027-28, strengthening the team's attack with a striker who has won 13 league titles and scored over 700 career goals. The move marks a significant investment in the Fire's bid to compete for the MLS Cup, with Lewandowski joining a squad currently third in the Eastern Conference with 26 points.
Elite Goal-Scorer Arrives in MLS
Lewandowski's career credentials span two decades of elite competition. At his introductory press conference alongside Head Coach and Director of Football Gregg Berhalter, the striker's achievements were outlined: he ranks third all-time in UEFA Champions League history with the most goals in the top five European leagues over the past 15 years. His club resume includes Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, followed by FC Barcelona in LaLiga. With Poland, he has accumulated 89 international goals across 167 caps, the most in his nation's history.
Lewandowski emphasized his winning mentality in his opening remarks. "When I start to play at a new club, always in front of me is [the goal] of winning some titles," he stated, adding that competition and the opportunity to capture championships drew him to Chicago. "In soccer you want competition, and there is something. Here, 'something' means to win some titles."
Chicago Fire's Expanded Attack
The Fire's offensive lineup now features Lewandowski partnered with fellow Designated Player striker Hugo Cuypers, who currently leads the MLS Golden Boot race with 13 goals and 2 assists. The team also boasts World Cup representation: goalkeeper Chris Brady competed for the United States, defender Joel Waterman for Canada, and defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi for South Africa. Mbokazi's recent World Cup performance with South Africa earned him the top fan vote for this summer's MLS All-Star Game presented by Chime.
Coach Berhalter framed the signing as a critical step forward. "We have a good team right now. I think Robert is a piece that can help take us to the top," he told reporters. Chicago Fire resumes play on July 22 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at TQL Stadium. The club made a playoff return last year under Berhalter's management and aims to build on that foundation with Lewandowski's proven pedigree in title races.
