Robert Lewandowski Visits Chicago Fire as MLS Move Intensifies

Robert Lewandowski is in active talks with Chicago Fire over a free transfer deal, with the Polish striker visiting the club's new training facility and city this weekend. The 37-year-old former Barcelona forward is also considering proposals from the Saudi Pro League and is expected to finalize his decision within weeks.

Lewandowski departed Barcelona after the previous season, where he contributed 14 goals across 31 La Liga appearances, though he started in only 17 of those matches. The striker also netted four times in 11 Champions League games during his tenure in Spain. Over his three seasons with Barcelona following his 2022 transfer from Bayern Munich, he accumulated 120 goals in 197 total appearances for the club.

Chicago Fire director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter publicly endorsed the prospect of acquiring Lewandowski, describing him as a world-class addition comparable to Lionel Messi in terms of playing ability. Berhalter suggested the signing would benefit not only the Fire but also the broader MLS brand. The Fire currently hold third place in the Eastern Conference and are preparing for a significant organizational shift, with a new stadium scheduled to open in 2028 as part of their strategic expansion plan.

The Polish legend's visit to Chicago comes as MLS has attracted an increasing number of elite European players in recent seasons. Messi plays for Inter Miami, Son Heung-min competes for Los Angeles FC, and other notable arrivals include Marco Reus, Hugo Lloris, and Timo Werner. If Lewandowski joins the Fire, he would become one of the highest-profile acquisitions in the league's recent history. The club currently features Belgian striker Hugo Cuypers, who leads MLS with 13 goals and earned selection to the All-Star Game, though the two forwards would likely operate in a two-striker system if Lewandowski signs.
