The code-in-the-box format—where retailers provide download codes instead of physical discs—has introduced complications for international buyers. Rockstar's support page now specifies that PlayStation Network account restrictions determine where codes can be redeemed. The safest approach is purchasing a copy in the same region where your console account is registered. A player with a United Kingdom PlayStation account, for example, should buy their copy from a UK retailer to avoid redemption failures.

Xbox users face no such limitations. Unlike PlayStation's region-based restrictions, Xbox codes purchased anywhere globally can be redeemed regardless of account location. This fundamental difference stems from how each platform's digital infrastructure operates.

Japan's Expiration Timeline

Players acquiring physical GTA 6 copies in Japan encounter a distinct regulatory requirement. Rockstar attributes this constraint to compliance with local Japanese regulations governing digital codes.
