Record-Setting Celebration
The Calgary event marked a significant milestone for Cowboys Music Festival, which has operated for three decades. Festival organisers chose the 30-year anniversary to pursue the official record count, viewing it as a statement about the vitality of the drag community. "Our goal with this record is to make this a title worth fighting for in the future, by expanding the size and impact of drag performances worldwide," they told Guinness World Records.
When RuPaul arrived at the festival, the crowd's reaction was immediate. The legendary performer later took the microphone to lip-sync to Queen's "We Are the Champions" as the record was officially confirmed by Guinness World Records adjudicator Tina Shi, who noted that "people were connected through music" and experienced "the passion and joy of music and dance."
Community Impact and Visibility
Local co-host Karla Marx emphasised the broader significance of the event's popularity. "It shows that queerness is celebrated and welcome in Alberta," she said. "On the biggest stages and in the biggest celebrations in Canada and Alberta… queerness is absolutely a vibrant part of our communities." Host Farrah Nuff, a local performer, expressed honour at being part of one of the festival's largest events.
The performance lineup extended beyond international Drag Race figures. Local Canadian artists participated alongside the headliners, with standout moments including Sasha Velour performing as a blue tasselled armchair and Nearah Nuff executing splits during the extended performance.
